Spectrometry, in its simplest form, is the process of identifying components of an amalgam of entities by observing a certain characteristic, thus creating a range, or spectrum, of that characteristic. For example, a sample containing analytes with multiple masses can be separated based upon mass. This creates a spectrum of masses present in the solution, thus facilitating identification of the unknown entities.
