Photoionization detectors are commonly used for detection of volatile hydrocarbons and other organic vapors. Gas molecules are ionized by ultraviolet light and the resulting ion current is directly proportional to the gas concentration. PID systems provide a rudimentary degree of chemical specificity because only chemicals with ionization potentials below the energy output of the PID lamp can be detected.
